Saw a matinée showing of Manhattan at the Reflet Médicis. When this shot appeared on the big screen, a woman in the audience loudly gasped, with what seemed like such a lust, such a yearning. Parisians really do love New York.
I adored it. My only gripe is that I didn’t get Mariel Hemingway as Tracy. She has that lovely delicacy, and she’s perfect in the soda fountain scene, but to me she’s absolutely no match for the roaring force of charm that is Diane Keaton. Tracy’s this uncomplicated blank, and Keaton’s Mary is the messy, magnetic whirlwind of fast talk and winsomeness (though others probably see her as an obnoxious neurotic [I guess my preference reveals a bit about me?]).
